The region of Peralada
Peralada is raised in a small hill in means of the flat one of the Alt Empordà, a region with a cultural and landscaping wealth very marked by its geographic situation in the most northeastern zone of the Iberian Peninsula. The location of the region, between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean sea, causes that the landscape is characterized like a unique place where a esplanade unites the sea with the mountain. With a Mediterranean climate and pleasant medium temperatures she is well-known like the country of the tramuntana, the wind of the north. The region, formed by 68 tonws, has a surface of 1.342,4 km² and one total population that surpasses the 100.000 inhabitants at the moment. One is located in the province of Girona, that simultaneously comprises of the Independent Community of Catalonia.
The capital of the region is in Figueres, city located in the center of the esplanade, takes the demographic and economic weight of the region. Figueres is the first city to the south of the border Franc-Spanish and point of convergence of ground communication lineses and railway. In Figueres is the seat of the Local Council of the Alt Empordà.
The region always has been from a traditional crossing site and a door of communication with Europe. The history of the Alt Empordà as border territory between France and Spain has turned it a constant scene of wars and invasions. As more remarkable element of our remote history we found more of a hundred of dólmenes and menhires in the zone of the Albera. Of the medieval time we conserved variety of románicas churches locating in the maximum exponents the Monastery of Vilabertran and Sant Pere de Rodes and of gothic style we emphasized the Cathedral of Castellón de Ampurias. Another culture that we must emphasize is the one of the painter ampurdanés rescuing Dalí, par excellence, been born in Figueres at the beginning of s.XX. Maximum exponent of the surrealism, Dalí turns Cadaqués artistic center of vanguard.
The region presents/displays great biological and ecological diversity. This natural patrimony is translated in two natural parks and a national place: the Natural Park of the Aiguamolls del Empordà, the Natural Park of the Cap de Creus and the Natural Place of the Albera. Also it groups an ample network of trekking, BTT and cycle-tourism.
Nostra Costa, well-known internationally like the Brave Coast, has beach diversity, from the recondite and calm coves to the crystalline coves like sandy grounds, steep cliffs and islands of biological interest like the Medas. Its coast, "sometimes brave", combines towns of great marine flavor.
The ampurdan kitchen has prestige, coverall by the special earth product combination and those of the sea, within the recognized Mediterranean kitchen. Denomination of origin Ampurdán Costa-Brava, the oil, the apples, the anchovies, the wine...
